FCE Practice Test: Try Out FCE Reading Paper 1 (2)

What do you have to do in part 1? Multiple choice cloze A cloze is a text with gaps. You have to fill in eight gaps by choosing from options A, B, C or D. At the very top there is always an example for you. The example is the gap in the text with number 0. A lot of students get confused because they try to put the first answer in gap 0. Ignore that and start with number 1. I have seen many people getting zero marks because they made this tiny but terrible mistake. The answers look something like the ones below. You can see that the four options for each gap go from left to right in eight rows and you simply choose the one that fits the gap. It belongs to the reading portion of the exam together with parts 5, 6 and 7 so it is not a Use of English task. It is important that you understand the structure of the whole exam paper before you start looking at each individual part. The 3 most difficult things about this part? There are a couple of difficulties that candidates have and mistakes they make in this part of the exam.

Without the right strategy you might not even be able to look at all the different parts. The most important piece to be successful is preparation. If you know what you have to do and the most efficient way to do it, you will win. If you think that you can just be lazy, walk into the exam and do it, you are wrong. Read as much as possible in your preparation. You will see tons of grammar and useful vocabulary which can be helpful in the exam. In the beginning I recommend reading for around minutes per day. Underline new words or phrases and look them up afterwards. Through this active reading approach you can achieve great success. Over the years, I have found that the following plan works for the majority of people in the FCE exam. I speak from my experience, but it is not a guarantee and you might find a better way for you. Read the title and text quickly optional The first step depends on you. If you feel that your understanding of texts in general as well as your knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures is good enough, feel free to jump to the next point.

FCE Reading And Use Of English Practice Tests

I have found, however, that most students benefit from reading the text first and then going to analyse the gaps. The reason for this is that a quick and I mean QUICK skimming of the text gives you a first idea of the topic, which can help once you try to find the best option for each gap. Cambridge do this on purpose because they want to test your English and not your knowledge of the topic.

If you knew a lot about it, you would have a little advantage, so you usually find strange topics like the one in our example task. Any idea what genealogy is? There you go. So, read the text once as fast as you can for a general idea and then move on to the next step. Look at the words before AND after each gap and look for signal words I put two tasks in one step for you because they go hand in hand. Firstly, you read the words before and after the gap. It is important to do both as you might find your signal word anywhere in the sentence. A signal word can be any word that helps you decide which option to choose as the correct answer. It tells us that we need some kind of comparative form in the gap. We can now look for a verb that collocates with it. Look at the possible answers and choose the one that fits the gap Now you get to decide what the correct answers are.

From the second step you know what you are looking for, but you still need to choose. Which of the options in 1 can we use with than? The last step is to look at the meanings. It is probably a good idea to jump between steps 2 and 3 for each gap so you can always fully focus on giving one answer before moving on to the next one. Does the text make sense? Do you feel as if you made the right choices? This is a good way of checking your answers. You will see that wrong answers pop out quite strongly and you know that you have to go back and possibly choose again. Make sure you find out more in my article on the topic to be on the safe side. Always remember that going into the exam ready is half of your success. Also, in the FCE exam you can not lose marks for giving wrong answers. Therefore, guess if you are not sure and always answer all the questions on your answer sheet. What about the other parts? Check out all of them by clicking the boxes below.

Hilary Rose reports At 7pm on a dark, cold November evening, thousands of people are making their way across a vast car park. They are all here for what is, bizarrely, a global phenomenon: they are here to see Holiday on Ice. But what does the production involve? And why are so many people prepared to spend their lives travelling round Europe in caravans in order to appear in it? The backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace. Each girl has a small area littered with pots of orange make-up, tubes of mascara and long false eyelashes. As a place to work, it must rank pretty low down the scale: the area round the ice-rink is grey and mucky with rows of dirty blue and brown plastic seating and red carpet tiles.

My theory is that you take those things that people want to see and you give it to them, but not in the way they expect to see it. You try to twist it. And you have to find music that is challenging to the skaters, because they have to do it every night. To be honest, for those of us whose only experience of ice-skating is watching top-class Olympic skaters, some of the movements can look a bit amateurish, but then, who are we to judge? My mother thought it would be a good outlet for positive childish energy and I was really into it; it was exciting. It was something different and I had much more time to practise then. The first time I performed in front of an audience was when I was five years old and I loved it. I went on a summer camp run by my piano teachers at the time and at the end of the week we all got up and played a piece.

At that age I was unaware of any of the pressure associated with performing live so it just felt nice to have people concentrating on my playing and I liked the applause and attention. Now I perform regularly, often in front of large audiences, and I still really enjoy it. I always knew I wanted to be a pianist and never thought I would do anything else. It always felt like schoolwork got in the way of playing the piano rather than the other way around.

Unfortunately I was never given any special allowances or extended deadlines though. I spend a lot of time in the library listening to music, trying to learn and become familiar with new pieces of music. One downside to choosing to study and pursue a career in music is that you end up spending hours and hours by yourself. I also try to spend time at college meeting other people and networking. The more musicians I know the more likely I am to be asked to play for others. It's important to get involved in as many performances as possible and take part in competitions so that as many people as possible see you perform and know who you are. Ultimately, if I am asked to play and get given a job it means that someone else loses work and sometimes it feels like a constant battle.

In the real world outside of college your audience is much wider. I chose to get involved in accompaniment because as much as I love playing the piano I also enjoy working with others. And working as an accompanist is a good way of doing that. There are also more job opportunities as although there is still a lot of competition other performers will always need good accompanists, so there is more demand. After much soul searching, I realised that whilst I could be a lawyer during the day and then enjoy cookery as a form of relaxation, the reverse was not true. Thus, I opted for a law degree and made food and wine my number one hobby. I have never regretted this decision. Working as a lawyer provided a good living and allowed me enough spare time to indulge myself by enjoying some very fine food and wines at many superb restaurants. I 9 A life in catering would have meant that I would always have been working when my friends were playing and vice versa. The hours that have to be worked by chefs are quite ridiculous. They have to arrive at their restaurant by mid-morning, at the latest, to prepare for lunch. They work all afternoon dealing with the business side of their establishment and developing new recipes. Then, they must prepare for evening service probably crawling into bed in the small hours of the next morning feeling absolutely shattered!
